We Are One
We Are One

Charcoal and Conté on paper. 14”x17”

From nature we are created, nourished and to it we shall return. When we care for nature and live with it, thrive with it— it is self-love. We are caring not just for our environment, but ourselves. As much as humans have tried to separate themselves from their roots and to convince themselves they are above and in control of it, our roots will claim us once again. We are not beyond nature. We are a part of it. We are one.

Peace in the Forest
Peace in the Forest

Charcoal on paper. 2024

When you need peace and quiet, a moonlit night in the forest by a small body of water can be incredibly calming. Despite that many creatures would be active during a full moon, it's a beautiful sight.
Pairs with Sia's "My Love."

"Casket Girls Out of Their Coffins"
"Casket Girls Out of Their Coffins"

Charcoal on paper. 03/2024
9”x12”

The Casket Girls are a famous legend in New Orleans, Louisiana. Young girls shipped from France to New Orleans, turned into vampires on their voyage over. One of the first vampire legends of the Crescent City, the Ursuline Convent attic is where they were supposedly kept upon their arrival.
In my depiction, I like to imagine them discovering their new fate as a strength in a time when women were treated like nothing more than a role. Young women who had no say in their own lives now had the strength to fight for themselves.

Music of the Night
Music of the Night

One of my all-time favorite books is Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. I am a phan!
It makes me sob every time. I love the story and the way it almost demands humanity, care, and understanding for those who are so different that society exiles them to solitude and loneliness. It is heartbreaking and my holiday book (and Valentine’s read as well). Beautiful in its creativity and imagery, its depth and exploration into what makes a monster.
Books have always been a love of mine and inspiring to me. I hope you all enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed drawing it that night.

Wither In Time

Charcoal on Paper. 2020

Of all things fragile in this universe, time doesn’t seem to be one of them. Only those subjected to time. The things that change the most are those in stages of life. Some appearing faster than others; plants to humans for example.
Though, where the sepal of a flower my wither and shrink, the flower continues to blossom and grow. Alive and well. Life is fragile- relationships, memories, our numbered days. Time is eternal. Time is a bookmark in the novels we live. Thrive and wither away. Time will remember you as it sees you in the next living display.

"If I had a heart that beat, a life force like yours begging for me would be what broke it."
Death is one of the last mercies of this realm, for even when we die, we are not alone. He is there. I think when we beg him to claim us and extinguish our light it saddens him like nothing else.

A woman or ghost,
alone with no throne
she stands at the forefront of right
to create a space of life.

A woman or ghost,
head of a home
she enlivens it and breathes life
into bare bones.

A ghost once a woman
she left behind her soul
in a place now cold and alone.
A place of wood, metal, and stone.

Remember her as she was,
remember who she was,
for she never shall be again.

A ghost of a woman unknown.
A spirit of a home,
which no one now lives in.

Empty, a shell,
it stands in quiet solitude,
awaiting its heart’s return.
In shadows you can see her,
a part of the vessel that whispers her name.

In hallways fit for a queen.
It chants, it begs to
feel alive again.

“Return! Return and light my hearth once more!
For your absence is a cruelty I
can bear no more.”

Tempting
Tempting

Sometimes it is all too tempting to make an island of ourselves and wallow in the dark. Sometimes it feels good to just give in to whatever is reaching to drag us down.
We tell ourselves we see something, knowing it is something else.
Sometimes we are tempted to just give up. We make ourselves so uncomfortable we believe we don't deserve to feel and be better.
However, we do.
So let yourself be miserable while you need it. Like medicine, though, you can only take it for a little while. After that, get better. Be better. Do better.
Clear the fog of your mind and breathe.
In and out. In and out.

Closets We Keep Closed
Closets We Keep Closed

In our minds we lock away
The monsters of our thoughts and fears.
Closets we keep and never clean,
Locks with rusted and missing keys.
They crawl, they creep,
Some eventually get free.
They can haunt us,
They can scare us.
Some may even hurt us.
Our demons and ghosts.
Do they ever really leave?
Run and hide,
Or jump out and play.
Those bumps in the night,
Friend or foe,
Angel or fae....

Graphite on paper. 5/2020

So often I lose myself to daydreams and although many of the things I imagine are not possible in this world it makes me so happy that I can see them. We fly when we gather enough feathers, enough strength to create the realities we want to see. We soar and get an aerial view of what this world can take; what it can do.
